Was hoping there would be more helpful information available through telnet.

But flashing to the latest 6.3 controller firmware is always recommended. In the KBA a firmware is mentioned, just above the one you're using now, so likely your system is affected. On the other hand, other controllers would also experience the same problems.

The issue mentioned in the KBA only affects MD series 2 controllers, series 1 don't show this behavior. The controller hotfix will bring the firmware to v6.3.4 Build 3536. Adding a stand-by controller is another (pricey) work-around.

Forum Post: RE: Work around Anti Reset Windup in DeltaV PID block

$

Interesting problem.  But you describe this as a need to activate Anti Reset Wind up.  Anti-Reset Windup is used to allow the output to saturate past the limit, but as soon as the output demand moves back out of limit, the reset value is "reduced by a factor of 16", moving the output more quickly out of the limit.  The limit value is fixed.  So this feature would not prevent wind up of TC1.  The Output Limit would stop the signal and prevent wind up, but at what value to place the limit?

During this C1 condition, what do you need the output of TC1 to do?  should it freeze?  Follow TC2?  Follow a different value?  Still respond to TC1 error if PV fluctuates.  Placing it in bypass would pass the CAS_IN to the OUT parameter.  Would the CAS_IN be changing or fixed to 307?

Maybe you simply need to track the TC1 output.  This disables the PID altogether, and in MAN you can set the option to allow user to change output, or not. You could track the PID to its OUT value, locking the PID in place when TRACK_IN is true.

You've only described part of your process and control requirement, so its difficult to see what you truly need.

Forum Post: new plugin install fail (AvctViewerPlugin.msi) after dsv3 to 4 migration

As the subject says, I just installed a fresh Server 2008 x64 and the newest DSV4 software (Version: 4.1.0.141), migrated my DSV3 DB to it (no issues there) and when testing a kvm session with Firefox 31, as expected you need to install the new version of the plugin. Well I downloaded it on the host server itself, and my Windows 7 workstation, and the plugin msi just fails to install. Yes browsers are closed etc.

I am actually in the works of a new purchase for KVM equipment and still on the deciding tip of whether to stay with Avocent/Emerson. So i really need to decide the way we are going.

As always using IE works fine as it auto installs the package etc. But I have too many users using LINUX/Firefox.

Thanks

I noticed the wrong init_chat above:

"" \d\d\d+++\d\d\dATZ OK

Omit the " OK" suffix by changing it to: "" \d\d\d+++\d\d\dATZ

The "OK" is the response from the modem, not an AT modem command that should be sent to the modem.

Hope that helps,

Forum Post: RE: Updating PCSD dynamos

Hi Steve,

It's not a PCSD issue specifically, valves from the standard frsModules_Theme dynamo set at v12 have the same issue i.e. resetting to the default orientation position.

I'm working on a solution for our client. Will let you know if we get something clever. But as we've not yet started our project, I believe creating 4 versions without the rotation option in a custom client dynamo set will be the simplest forward for us, with the frsdynamoinfo different per orientation e.g. MA1_VLV0_, MA1_VLV90_, MA1_VLV180_, MA1_VLV270_. I know this doesn't help if you've already created multiple graphics that need an update.

This was a very timely post for us, before we fell down the chasm.

Thanks,

Neil.

Blog Post: Enabling Release by Exception Manufacturing

Michalle Adkins Manager, Life Sciences Consulting

Michalle Adkins
Manager, Life Sciences Consulting

The Emerson Exchange conference October 6-10 in Orlando, Florida USA is rapidly approaching. I caught up with Emerson’s Michalle Adkins who mentioned that her team of Life Sciences consultants would be highlighting the enablement of release by exception.

Although release by exception and real-time release are not yet a reality for the majority of pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing processes, Michalle has heard that a few companies are managing to move forward with this concept within the context of certain well-characterized processes.

So what exactly is release by exception?

Release by exception is possible in cases where a process is well characterized and the critical process parameters and critical quality attributes are well defined and understood. The product (or intermediates) could be released automatically as long as there are no deviations within the manufacturing process.

While this may be a stretch yet for many processes, there are certainly many tools that can enable companies to get closer to reaching this goal. In earlier posts, such as Implementing Process Analytical Technology [PAT] and Continuous Process Verification, we highlighted some of the technologies and capabilities that can support this endeavor. Fundamentally, tools that can eliminate variability in the process, enable right first time production, and provide real-time measurement of Critical Quality Attributes will enable manufacturers to reach these goals.

Michalle points to an array of technologies and services to implement process control for pharmaceutical and biotech facilities. Technologies such as Syncade Smart Operations Management Suite, DeltaV Process Automation, synTQ PAT platform (partner), and measurement instrumentations and control devices by Rosemount, Fisher Valves and Instruments, Micro Motion, and ASCO all work together to provide a solution that enables quality, compliance, and right first time operations to enable release by exception.

At the base of this solution is the ANSI/ISA-95 (S95) level 1 & 2 capability to see and control the process in real-time. When DeltaV Batch analytics are added in along with PAT, process variability can be minimized and critical quality attributes can be predicted in real-time to ensure that the batch is on the right trajectory.

Syncade software is used to ensure that all of the manual operations are managed correctly in conjunction with the automated steps. Adding these workflows helps manage the right-the-first-time pieces of the puzzle. For example, ensuring that the trained personnel are adding the right material to the right batch at the right time and that the equipment is in the right state for use.

While the technologies continue to advance and experience is gained through the application of these technologies, more pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturers will get closer to a release by exception and real-time release mode of operation.

If you’ll be joining us in Orlando, make sure to visit with Michalle and the Life Sciences consultants to discuss the enablement of release by exception. If you can’t join us, make sure to connect and interact with other Life Sciences professionals in the Life Sciences track of the Emerson Exchange 365 community.

According to the DeltaV Virtualization Planning and Installation Guide ( D800061X042).  Windows 7 Enterprise is not only supported but provided as an option for templates with DeltaV already installed (11317ENTSP1, 12317ENTSP1 for 11.3.1 and 12.3.1 respectively).

www3.emersonprocess.com/.../DeltaV_Virtualization_Planning_and_Installation_Guide.pdf

There are some caveats about this OS, so read the guide thoroughly.

To answer your question, yes the only mention of Windows 7 Enterprise is in regards to virtualized workstations, production and simulation environment, and not physical workstations.

There are two things to take away.

1. Using TEXT versus an Internal Variable.  Matt nailed it with the internal variable.  The original expression looked like it was writing the word START, but the syntax actually created a variable called START.  This variable was actually a floating point value of 0.0.  That is why it did not work.  Matt gets a ribbon.

2. Be sure you check the MODE.ACTUAL to avoid failed writes.  Although the write to SP_D would likely be successful, it would fail the first time if mode was not already AUTO as the MODE parameter must execute before ACTUAL follows the TARGET.  This is more a best practice, like error handling in VBA code.  An SFC gives you built in structure for pre-checks, and confirmation of actions.

Nice little example...

Forum Post: RE: DeltaV on Windows 7 Enterprise

The Virtual Machine Images with windows 7 Enterprise are provided as 64 Bit OS.  The Release notes indicates that only Windows 7 Professional is supported for physical workstations.  It is available for 32 Bit or 64 bit, but the compatibility chart specifies certain models for each OS.

The main reason is that Emerson fully tests the supported hardware with the OS and DeltaV software.  They want to make sure there are no surprises introduced by device drivers and combinations of hardware and software, and that they can reproduce an issue by having the same hardware software combinations.  During install, DeltaV checks the OS and will not install if it is not recognized as supported.  Now that we see Enterprise edition in the VM's, one might be able to install this version, but it would not be supported as it is not listed in the release notes.

Also, Emerson provided Workstations come with OEM licensing for the OS.  You would not be able to order a Workstation from Emerson with Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit OS licensing.

In the virtualization environment, you must provide the OS activation license and this is expected to come either via a VDA subscription or from your Microsoft corporate license. The VM Templates will not ship until proof of the Client OS licensing is provided.  Thin Client stations require VDA licensing to cover the RDP access to Windows Desktops.  The WYSE thin clients come with OEM licensing of their local windows OS, but the RDP access to a Windows 7 VM requires VDA licensing.  The cool thing is the VDA license comes with Windows 7 OS licensing you can apply to the Windows VM.

So based on the Release notes, and the fact you get OEM licensing on the DeltaV workstations from Emerson, you would have to purchase an unsupported workstation and externally license it to get Windows 7 Enterprise, and assuming you were able to install DeltaV on it, it would be an unsupported platform.  Not something I'd be shooting for on a production system.

For a DeltaV Standalone, I'd encourage getting DeltaV on a Stick, which runs with Virtual PC, and can be run on your Windows 7 Enterprise laptop or workstation.  If you are setting up a larger development system, I suggest going virtual all the way.

It sounds like you want all drive output control to go through the CAS of the AO block, so that even when the DC is in auto, the AO should be written via the CAS_IN.

You can remove AUTO as a permitted mode from the AO block.  Then the only output to the drive is via the CAS_IN of the AO.

It looks like you are already  zeroing the drive output when the motor is not running.  Do you also need the cascaded setpoint to track to zero when the motor is stopped?  This doesn't look like it is currently being done, but as Matt said, a diagram of the ins and outs would help.

The link above is still active but there is not W2K8 drivers.  Since this product became inactive before the release of W2K8 there was no developement of drivers to facilitate that OS.
